I’m writing a scene in my new novel that takes place at the 2003 VMAs. (I know, I’m excited too!!) I’ve got a million research documents that I’ve put together for this book—everything from Y2K slang to fashion to important cultural events—but when I started this VMA moment I suddenly realized I needed to think about how information traveled in those early aughts years.
If something big happened at the VMAs, how would you know about it?

I texted my college roommates to find out if we even had a DVR in 2003.
